As well as appearing as a featured artist with bands such as John Scurry’s Reverse Swing, the Vitality Five (UK) and Peter Baylor’s Ultrafox, Michael also leads three distinct bands of his own:

Mike’s Retro Five

The Retro Five (or Three, Four, Six or Seven!) features the hottest vintage style musicians around, presenting an eclectic mix of the sweet pop songs, art deco melodies and raw barrelhouse blues. Dapper dress and speakeasy atmosphere!

Michael McQuaid’s Red Hot Rhythmakers

The Red Hot Rhythmakers, established in 2004, are Australia’s premier hot jazz big band. After two acclaimed albums, international touring and regular showcase performances back home in Australia, the band is exciting for dancers and listeners. Their authentic big band sound stems from their huge repertoire of transcriptions, arrangements and compositions, mostly by their leader.

Michael McQuaid’s Late Hour Boys

This band pays homage (in both name and style) to Lazy Ade Monsbourgh & his Late Hour Boys. An Australian jazz pioneer whose career stretched from the 1930s to the beginning of the 21st century, Ade was a mentor of Michael’s, and this band draws heavily not only on Ade’s compositions, but also his laid-back, swinging sound.
